Why is sustainability a crucial driving factor for the Indian Spice Market?

Insecure Farmer livelihood

If someone is going to cultivate spices, they are farmers. With the rising cost of production and the need to optimize equipment, the income of small-scale farmers is getting squeezed in reaching markets. They also have limited medical access. Farmers are not made aware of more productive and contemporary methods of farming that aren’t at all sustainable. Unfair bargaining has forced them to accept clauses that aren’t justified enough. All of these problems need a thoughtful solution and improvisation. 

Improper harvesting technique

Recent harvesting methods have led to a gradual decline in the spice quality. This refers to untimely or immature harvesting that affects the good quality of spices. For example, only fully ripe pepper should be plucked from the vines and then further dried for market sale of spices. Another related measure is the usage of specifically clean concrete floors for threshing and plucking pepper spikes. One cannot thresh the spice on cow dung smeared floors. Using plastic or aluminium vessels to handle green pepper is the best remedy because it holds a lot of moisture. These little technicalities can result in the best quality harvests of all time.
